Agriculture and forestry, helping to maintain biodiversity.

HAZI assists, supports and advises the Basque Agricultural Department, both from a strategic and an administrative point of view, on issues around environmental impact, especially in aspects related to climate change and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The aim is to promote the resilience of the rural environment to climate change to help mitigate its impact, promote sustainable agriculture in line with the sustainable development goals and improve the role of environmental conservation in plans and projects in rural areas.

SDGs

The 15 Sustainable Development Goals are the joint strategy to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. HAZI, as part of the Basque government, is committed to these SDGs promoted by the United Nations through supporting the different agents and links in the rural environment and the food and wood value chain. The purpose is to increase the contribution its plans and projects make to achieving these sustainable development goals.

Areas of high natural value

Most areas of high natural value in our region are the result of the interaction over time of human activity, mainly agricultural, with the natural systems. HAZI offers solutions for promoting a sustainable and lasting use of those spaces by helping in their planning and management, identifying and developing support strategies and providing tools to improve the plans and projects run there.

  • Service to verify the impact of projects in the field.
  • Environmental assessment procedures.
  • Support service for planning Protected Natural Areas (PNAs).
  • Support service for managing PNAs and other relevant elements of biodiversity.
  • Promotion of agriculture and livestock farming.

Environmental innovation

HAZI runs pilot or demonstration projects with various innovative approaches to improve the environmental integrity of agricultural activity, such as payments for ecosystem services, payments for agri-environmental results, support for high-value agricultural systems, support for agro-environmental practices, differentiation of products due to their contribution to biodiversity, etc.
